My 2013 Top 10 Films ~ No. 5 - No. 1

Welcome to the second part of my top 10 favourite movies of 2013. If you missed part 1, you can click here. For those who already read that, let's continue with the remaining five movies in my list. Hope you enjoy the post.

5) The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

This second film in a planned trilogy is doing very well at the box office and most probably do as well as its predecessor, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey which raked in more than $1 billion at the box office. Personally, I feel The Desolation of Smaug is a much better film than An Unexpected Journey in terms of its plot, pace, action, and emotion that it gives to audiences. All the casts did great in the movie but I'm particularly very impressed with the dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) which made a very convincing and intimidating appearance in the film. And it has a great cliffhanger ending too which make me even more excited for the third film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again.

4) The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Even before the film was released, I already predicted that this film would be in my top 10 list because I love the first film so much that it would seem impossible that I wouldn't love this one. I was right, I love Catching Fire, it was an amazing experience watching this movie at the cinema. But I realized that eventhough the film grossed more than $830 million at the box office, a lot of people actually didn't like this film based on some comments I read online with people saying they wasted their money seeing this movie at the cinema. Of course those commentators who said that they hate the movie might be just a portion of the whole audiences but still it kept me thinking; did the movie made so much money because there are people who watch it not because they like the franchise but because they are curious about the movie due to its aggressive advertising and also out of curiosity? If this is true, I wonder how Mockingjay Part 1 (the next sequel in the film series) would perform at the box office?

3) Frozen

The only animation film in this list, Disney's Frozen is definitely one of the best animated film to be released in 2013. Great visuals, filled with wonderful songs, and a touching story about the bond of two sisters that had been compromised by a gift (or curse) of magic. I love the characters as well, especially Olaf the snowman whom I thought I would hate based on what I've seen of him from the movie trailers but ended up liking him instead. I also feel that the plot about the relationship between two sisters has a lot of good moral values to children. The movie is making good business too; grossing $640 million (and counting) at worldwide box office while snagging awards at film festivals as well.

2) Pacific Rim

I love Pacific Rim so much! Such an eye-popping film to watch with great action sequences and amazing scenes that if I could freeze those amazing scenes and print them, they would have made great posters or pictures to hang on my wall. Maybe I love the movie so much because I grew up with Ultraman series and other TV series with people piloting giant mecha battling with gigantic monsters. But I guess the concept is a little bit hard to swallow for mainstream audiences who are not exposed to this type of genre since the movie did not grossed as much as the studio and filmmakers would like them to earn. Such a shame really because the movie not only good to look at, but I feel it has a strong plot and characters as well. I would really love to see the movie to get a sequel but with the box office number that it has now, it seems very unlikely for that to happen.

1) Cloud Atlas

The number 1 spot and is now officially my favourite movie of 2013 is Cloud Atlas! This might come as a surprise to some since the movie did released in 2012 in some countries but it was only released in Malaysia (where I'm from by the way) early 2013, so that's why it made the 2013 list instead. The movie had trouble getting finances and therefore had to rely on independent sources, making it the most expensive independent film of all time. The enthusiasm of the filmmakers and the casts involved in making this film are very admirable. I'm glad the movie got made because it has such an amazing plot with 6 different storyline from 6 different eras. At first when I found out about this, I expect myself to get all confused about the plot (as I seldom watch heavy-themed movie like Cloud Atlas) but surprisingly, the plot was not that hard to follow. The stories flow smoothly even though it continuously jump from one era to another, and they are interesting to follow as well making me eager to know what would happen to these characters. It is such a unique movie and that is why it got the number 1 spot in my list.

Thank you for reading all the way to my number one film! So did any of your favourite film appeared in my list? We're already in 2014 and I'm looking forward to more great films to watch. I hope you enjoy this post of mine and do come again for other posts as well. Thanks!
