What to watch? ~ 2014 movies: May

Summer movies season is finally here! Lots of blockbuster movies are now ready to battle each other to be at the top of the box-office. Which of them will succeed? And which of them will fail? It will be a pack summer this year, that's for sure. Here are some of the movies that I'm most excited for that will be released in May. Let's check it out.

1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2

After an unnecessary reboot (which turned out to be quite an interesting movie anyway), now the sequel to that reboot film is ready to bring audiences to another great adventure with spidey. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will pit Spider-Man against three villains; Electro, Green Goblin and The Rhino, and will further explore the relationship between Peter Parker's past and Oscorp. Interestingly, two more sequels had already being planned, with the third film is scheduled to be released in 2016 and the fourth film in 2018, with two more spin-offs are being planned as well. Looks like Sony has a lot of faith in this franchise, and only time will tell if the franchise could even survive that long. Personally, I think this new take on the character is refreshing and I certainly don't mind more sequels if the studio manage to keep on producing good films. Let's hope for the best. The movie starred Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone once again as Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy alongside newcomers of the franchise Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan and Paul Giamatti. Although already released in certain markets, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would be released in US on May 2, 2014.

2. Godzilla

As a kid, I really like the 1998 Godzilla movie from Hollywood but as I grew older I understand why most people hated it. Now Hollywood is trying again with a new Godzilla movie and judging by the trailers, it looks like this dark take on the monstrous creature is going to be good. But I'm not sure how this movie will perform at the box-office. Last year we had a same kind of movie with giant monsters in Pacific Rim, although it made quite a lot of money at the box-office, it did poorly in certain markets. Hopefully Godzilla will perform better in those markets and do well overall. We will just have to wait and see. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen (just a side note, this two will again appear together in Avenger's: Age of Ultron as Pietro Maximoff / Quicksilver and Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch respectively), Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins and Juliette Binoche, Godzilla is scheduled to be released on May 16, 2014.

3. X-Men: Days of Future Past

I've been waiting for another X-Men film (not a spin-off) for quite some time. It's exciting to see that the studio would bring together two generations of X-Men (one from the original trilogy, and another from X-Men: First Class film that were set in the past) into one movie. I only have one question though; how would they fix the timeline? The continuity of the film franchise is all over the place now and confusing with the original trilogy, prequel and spin-offs. Would they make it work? To be honest, I actually don't really care about the timeline because as confusing as they are (the timeline I mean), the movies are still enjoyable and have great entertainment value. However, since they are bringing the characters from the past together with the characters in the present, they have to at least explain a bit about the timeline to make it clear to the audiences, or at least to make it less confusing. Nevertheless, I'm pretty sure this film would be entertaining just like the rest. With an ensemble cast that includes Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Halle Berry, Jennifer Lawrence, Ellen Page, Peter Dinklage, Evan Peters, Shawn Ashmore and Fan Bingbing, this film is scheduled to be released on May 23, 2014.

4. Maleficent

Maleficent will be yet another live-action fairy tale movie that will hit cinemas hoping to follow the steps of the live-action Alice in Wonderland and Snow White and the Huntsman for a worldwide success. The movie had gain some traction online because of its trailers featuring a creepy Angeline Jolie as the title character, so it has a high chance to score big when it is finally open in cinemas. Although there are a few live-action fairy tale movies that didn't do good business at the box-office like Mirror Mirror, Red Riding Hood (a 2011 film starred Amanda Seyfried) and Beastly (a 2011 film starring Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens), but none of them are at a big scale like Maleficent, so I have a feeling that this film will do just fine. A directorial debut of Robert Stromberg, a former production designer for Alice in Wonderland and Oz the Great and Powerful, Maleficent will stars Angeline Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Sharlto Copley and Brenton Thwaites, and will open in cinemas on May 30, 2014.

So, that's all for May. Many other exciting movies are coming in the following months. Are you ready for summer movies season?
