2013 Summer movies ~ What to watch? (Part 1)

Last year summer movies season was packed with great movies that I truly enjoyed such as The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and Prometheus. So what movies would Hollywood brings us this year? And can they top the great box-office numbers of 2012 summer movies? Let's check out some of this year summer movies that had caught my interest. For Part 1, let's look at movies released in May and June 2013.

May

1) Iron Man 3

The first movie had really good story, while Iron Man 2 had pretty good action sequences. What about this third movie? Judging from the trailer, I think it would have the combination of both. Robert Downey, Jr. is back as Tony Stark aka Iron Man and this film would also introduces new characters and villains such as Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin, Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian, and Rebecca Hall as Dr. Maya Hansen. I am not sure about the plot, but it will revolves around yet another terrorist organization and a type of virus called Extremis virus. The conflict in this movie seemed to be more personal too to Tony Stark compared to the last two films. Will he prevail this time too?

2) Epic

This computer-animated movie by Blue Sky Studios featured the voices of Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson, Colin Farrell, Christoph Waltz, Beyonce Knowles and Aziz Ansari. The film would tell the story of a young girl who is forced to join a group of tiny forest warriors in a war against an evil force to save their world. I think those who already watched the trailer for this movie would agree that it is visually stunning, and I think the movie would be funny too especially with the slug character. The trailer did impressed me a lot so hopefully the movie would not disappoint.

3) Fast and Furious 6

To be honest, I am not a fan of The Fast and The Furious movie series. It's not that I think they are bad movies, but more because of my lack of interest in street racing. But after watching the trailer for this sixth installment, I must say that I might be watching it in the cinema when it come out this May. The movie looks fun with its wickedly awesome stunts and pack with heart-pounding action scenes. And the story seemed to have evolve too and will not just focus on the street racing. Will that be a good move for a movie series known for it street-racing action? Personally, with its loyal fanbase, I think the movie will do just fine.

June

4) After Earth

After several movies, I think we can all agree that it is always risky to spend money to watch M. Night Shyamalan's film in cinema but that's a risk I'm willing to take with After Earth. While the director did helmed some of the poor-received movies but I did genuinely liked some of his movies. And on the plus side, After Earth starred father and son, Will Smith and Jaden Smith, as Cypher Raige and Kitai Raige who got stranded on Earth, which humanity had abandoned 1000 years earlier. It sounds like a good premise but only time will tell whether it will be a movie worth watching.

5) Man of Steel

I'm not really a fan of Superman Returns, but I do want to see Man of Steel because I believe the franchise still has a lot to give not just to the fans of the comic book superhero but to the general audience as well. So far, the trailer looks good, and the fact that it is directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan also give me a bit of hope that this movie will be good. The film will be a reboot of the Superman movie series and will tell the origin's story for the character. Hopefully this will be a start to a great movie series for the new generation.

6) Monsters University

Pixar made great computer-animated films but they rarely make follow-up movies like sequels or prequels; Toy Story and Cars are the only films that have follow-up movies after the original film. Monsters University will be the first prequel film from Pixar and it will be a prequel to their Monsters, Inc. film. It will tell the story of Sulley and Mike in their university days and how they become from rivalry to best-friends. It will be fun to see how the life in college will be reflected in this world. I'm sure it will be a film full of laughs and hopefully a film with a heart as well.

7) World War Z

Gone are the slow-walking zombies, it's the fast zombies that rule the silver screen nowadays. World War Z is a post-apocalyptic film about zombie outbreak. It is based on a book by Max Brooks, directed by Marc Forster and starred Brad Pitt. I read some complaints about the trailer that were released from the book's fans that stated it didn't reflect the atmosphere of the book, with one example is the zombie where in the book they are slow walkers while in the movies they are fast runners. The film also suffered some problems during production with some scenes had to reshoot. For someone who had not read the book, the film could be the worst book-adaptation film in which it is not faithful to the book at all (which leaves the question of naming the film similar to the book), but in the end, it could also possily become a good action film. We will just have to wait and see the final result of that.

We already look at seven summer movies that had caught my attention. In Part 2, I will revealed another five movies that will be released between July and August 2013 that got me interested. What do you think about this list? Do I missed any movie released in May and June 2013 that you think I should consider to watch? Do comeback for Part 2 of this post. Thank you for reading!
