My 2012 Top 10 Films ~ Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of my Top 10 films of 2012. For those of you who had missed out my previous post, you can click here for Part 1 where I revealed number 10 to number 6. In this second part, I present you my top 5;

5) John Carter

John Carter is a great sci-fi / fantasy / adventure film that fills with wonders and amazement not just with the visuals, but the story as well. It is a live-action debut for director Andrew Stanton who previously directed Pixar's animated films Finding Nemo and WALL-E. Unfortunately, eventhough the film grossed more than $250 million worldwide, it is still considered a box-office failure due to its high production and marketing budget. Personally, I think it is one of the best movie that I've watched in 2012. It's epic, action-packed and emotional in certain parts too. Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins were great as John Carter and Dejah Thoris respectively. Since it is based on A Princess of Mars, the first book in the Barsoom book series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, there are sources for Disney to do more sequels but with the box-office records, sadly to say that any hope of sequel is now gone.

4) The Avengers

This film is definitely one of the most fun movie to watch in 2012. When you get Iron Man, Thor, Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow and Hawkeye in one film, what could be more interesting than that? The Avengers not only bode well with film critics, it also well-received by audiences and currently is the highest grossing superhero movie of all time. That's an impressive record! It's a light, action-packed and, at times, humorous movie that almost everyone (old and young, comic book fans or movie fans) can enjoy. Although Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man steals the light everytime he's on screen, but my favourite character from this film has to be Hulk played briliantly by Mark Ruffalo. With an impressive box-office numbers, the superheroes will definitely team-up again in a sequel set for release in 2015.

3) The Dark Knight Rises

Another superhero movie that made a big splash in 2012 is The Dark Knight Rises. Contrary to The Avengers, this film has a more dark and serious tone just like its predecessors. Although at first I was unimpressive with the touch of realism first introduced in Batman Begins, I was later converted into a fan after watching the incredible 2nd film in the trilogy, The Dark Knight. Although The Dark Knight Rises can be a bit too fast-paced sometimes that made me a bit hard to follow the plot, it is still a perfect finale for the trilogy. With a good plot, interesting casts and high-quality production value, The Dark Knight Rises earned the number three spot on this list.

2) Wreck-It Ralph

The highest ranked animation film and placed itself the runner-up spot on this list is Wreck-It Ralph. The first thing that captured audiences is the beautiful, stunning and eye-popping visuals of the animation, especially when it comes to the candy-coated world of Sugar Rush, where most of the movie takes place. Then you have the lovable characters; Vanellope von Schweetz (my favourite!), a racer / glitch from the racing game Sugar Rush; Sergeant Calhoun, a tough Cy-Bug-killer from the first-person shooter Hero's Duty; Fix-It Felix, Jr., the nerdy hero from the arcade game Fix-It Felix, Jr.; and Wreck-It Ralph himself, the main villain from Fix-It Felix, Jr. After that, you have all these great cameos; Chun-Li, Zangief, M. Bison, Ryu, Ken (Street Fighter), Sonic (Sonic the Hedgehog), Pac-Man, and many more. And last but not least, and probably the best of all, is the film's great plot. It's touching and relatable in more ways than one. I also love the several emotional and heart-wrenching scenes that it has. With all those qualities, I think it is safe to say that Wreck-It Ralph is the best animation film of the year.

1) The Hunger Games

And the number one spot goes to...(drumroll please)...The Hunger Games! It was based on the first book of a trilogy by Suzanne Collins with three more movie sequels planned for release in the coming years. A box-office success (the film gained more than $650 million worldwide with a budget of $78 million), the film starred Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson and Elizabeth Banks. While a lot of the book's fans complaint about the change in the plot and how many vital parts of the novel were left out from the movie, as someone who haven't read the book, watching the movie in the cinema was definitely a satisfying movie experience for me. I felt disgusted by the ignorant people of Capitol and sympatized with the Tributes who had to suffer for the entertainment of others. It is these emotions that I felt while watching the film that made me feel that The Hunger Games is such a powerful film. It is a clever and thought-provoking film that worth the top spot in my list.

So we finally finished counting down my Top 10 films for 2012. What are your thoughts on this? Do any of your favourite films made the list? Or do you think we have different taste in movies? ;-)

I hope you enjoy your visit and thank you for reading!
